Booking a Charter
● What areas do you serve in Costa Rica?
We help our visitors tour much of the waters of the Southern Nicoya Peninsula on the western part of Costa Rica, along the Pacific Ocean. We take cruises and fishing trips through the waters of Tambor, Montezuma, Malpais, Santa Teresa, and Cabo Blanco. Each area has its own unique features and coastline. Our service areas also include the waters of various wildlife reserves such as the Cabo Blanco Reserve and the Nicolas Wessberg Reserve.
● Where is your boat located/where can we find you?
Our boat is docked in the Bay of Ballena, specifically at Playa Pochote, north of Tambor Beach. Most cruises depart from this location; however, we may be able to pick you up at certain local beaches if waves and tides allow.
● What kind of boat will we be fishing from? Is your boat safe?
Yes, our 25’ Samara25 center console sport fishing boat is both safe and ideal for inshore and offshore fishing. Propelled by a well-maintained 2016 Suzuki 140 hp outboard motor, our boat can run up to 28 knots fully-loaded, and is equipped with all necessary radios, GPS, and safety equipment.
Our captains also know these waters well and have a combined 30 years experience fishing and boating in the Southern Nicoya Peninsula!
● What kind of charters do you offer?
Orca Fishing Club provides inshore, offshore, and fly-fishing excursions, as well as whale watching when in season. Learn more about what we offer by clicking on “Charters” in the site menu.
Preparing for Your Trip
● What should we wear?
Wear comfortable clothing that you don’t mind getting wet or a little “fishy” as well as any type of shoes (even flip-flops are fine, but no heels). It can get very hot on the water, especially in the middle of the day, so please wear something that will keep you cool!
● What do we need to bring?
We provide all necessary bait, tackle, and fishing gear, and we also provide food and ice. We recommend bringing sunscreen, a hat, and polarized sunglasses. Also, bring a great attitude ready to spend a wonderful day on the water!
● Do we need to bring our own food/drinks?
We provide food and ice - please bring your own alcoholic beverages, if you desire.
● What fishing gear do you provide?
We provide everything you need for an enjoyable, successful, and safe fishing or whale watching trip. We provide outriggers, Fish Finders, bait and tackle, as well as rods. We also have shade on the boat for especially warm days.
During Your Trip
● What kind of fish can we expect to catch?
You can expect a great variety in the Southern Nicoya Peninsula! In the past, we’ve caught YellowFin Tuna, Mahi Mahi, Rooster fish, Wahoo, Sailfish, Marlin, Snapper, Grouper, Skip jack, Rainbow Runner, Sierra Mackerel, Barracuda, Crocodile Needlefish, Snook, Sea Bass, and more.
● How long will our fishing trip be?
Please select your desired trip length when you book a trip with us online. We offer trips of various lengths, including 4 hours, 6 hours, and 8 hours.
● If we’re whale watching, what kind of whales and other wildlife will we see?
You can count on some of the best whale watching in the world when in season here in the Southern Nicoya Peninsula! Visiting humpback whales stop here to give birth to their offspring off the coast as they migrate according to the seasons. We may also see a variety of dolphins, sea turtles, and frigate birds.
● Can we take our fish with us?
While we encourage catch and release here at Orca Fishing Club, we have no issue with you taking your catch with you and preparing it shortly after. However, we are very opposed to waste! So, please enjoy your fresh catch and don’t waste what you decide to keep. Please also note that it is very difficult to ship fish anywhere in the world due to the location of the Southern Nicoya Peninsula, so you’ll need to enjoy your catch here.
