About Malpais, Costa Rica
Malpais means “bad country” but in reality, this part of the world is nothing of the sort. In fact, it’s a little slice of paradise. When fishing in Malpais, Costa Rica you’ll be treated to views of our untouched rocky beaches with a few sand bars here and there. Whether you're fishing inshore or offshore, you’ll notice our coasts have an impressive surf, which explains why Malpais is so popular among surfers of all skill levels.
It isn’t hard to see that Malpais and the Nicoya Peninsula are teeming with marine life. Isla Blanco is visible from shore and is home to nesting frigate birds. You may also see dolphins, sting rays, sea turtles and, when they’re in season, humpback whales passing through Costa Rican waters as they migrate each season.
We offer whale watching tours during peak migration times including December through March, and August through December!

Inshore: Fishing in waters up to 50 feet deep, you may catch Mackerel, Red Snappers, Mahi Mahi, or Grouper.
Offshore: In deeper waters, you’ll try for bigger catches like Sailfish, Marlin, Yellowfin tuna, and more.
Some of our Malpais, Costa Rica charter fishing clients love to keep their catch and prepare it on the grill later on for dinner. But if that doesn’t sound like you, no worries -- we encourage catch and release!
